Cristiano Ronaldo has had his World Cup cut disappointingly short after Spain won by a goal to nil in the second round of the competition against Portugal.
The game had started promisingly for Portugal and was evenly contested throughout the first half, both teams having decent opportunities to score. Cristiano Ronaldo had a few trademark free kicks saved by Real Madrid teammate Iker Casillas and was frustrated to go into half-time still goalless.
It was Spain that looked more menacing in the second half of the match and Cristiano Ronaldo was given very little in the way of service from his Portuguese teammates. For their endeavor, Spain took the lead through David Villa on the 63rd minute. Terrific play from Xavi and Iniesta gifted David Villa a sight on goal. His first attempt was saved by Ricardo, but he made no mistake on the follow-up.
It was Spain who continued to press for the remainder of the match, looking for a second goal which failed to come, thanks to some excellent goalkeeping from Ricardo.
Costa was dismissed for Portugal in the closing stages of the game for an elbow on Capdevilla which signaled the end for Portugal. They will look to bounce back now in the Euro 2012 competition and the qualifying campaign before the tournament.
