Real Madrid 1 Olympique Lyon 1 (aggregate 1-2) - Cristiano Ronaldo scores but it isn't enough as Los Blancos are elminated from the Champions League

Disaster struck last night in the Spanish capital Madrid as Real Madrid were incredibly eliminated from the Champions League by French side Lyon.

Real Madrid started very brightly, knowing that having lost 1-0 in Lyon, they would have to respond strongly. Within 6 minutes they were ahead from the goal machine Cristiano Ronaldo. Following a perfect through ball down the flank, Ronaldo latched onto it with lightning pace and struck a shot through the legs of the despairing Lyon keeper.

Minutes later, Real Madrid had an opportunity to go two goals up. Gonzalo Higuain was sent clear on goal; he did everything right by rounding the keeper, but somehow managed to hit the post with an open goal gaping.

Things got worse for Higuain later on in the first half. He had another brilliant opportunity. Cristiano Ronaldo was beside him with a lot a space, but selfishly, Higuain opted to shoot, which was well saved by Lloris. It should have been the second.

On the 75th minute, the unthinkable happened. Pjanic, who was a menace to Real in the first leg, did the damage. In a tight space in the penalty box, he controlled sensationally and shot powerfully past Casillas. Lyon were level and there was no way back for Real Madrid. Although Cristiano Ronaldo is the top scorer in the competition this season, Real Madrid are now out of the competition and will not be playing the final in the Bernabeu in May.
