Olympique Lyon 1 Real Madrid 0 - Lyon in pole position after Cristiano Ronaldo and company fail to shine

Lyon won the first leg of their Champions League encounter with Real Madrid by a goal to nil, thanks to a stunning 20-yard strike by Jean Makoun.

Real Madrid were far from their polished best on the night and were often shut out by some stubborn Lyon defending.

Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates should not be faulted for their effort. However it was the end product which was missing, largely due to the quality of Lyon's defending on the night.

The goal came in the 47th minute, just after half time. Makoun unleashed an unstoppable shot which span into the top corner, leaving Casillas helpless.

Ronaldo was industrious but could not penetrate the Lyon rearguard. The best chance for Madrid fell to Gonzalo Higuain. Higuain raced clear on goal but could not beat the keeper.

The next and decisive match will be played at the Bernabeu on March 10th.
