Marseille 1 Real Madrid 3 - Cristiano Ronaldo double sinks Marseille's Champions League hopes

Cristiano Ronaldo was the driving force behind another Real Madrid victory, as they qualified for the next stage of the Champions League in style with a 3-1 victory away in Marseille.

Just 5 minutes into the match, Real Madrid were awarded a free kick around 35 yards from goal. In traditional style, Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and rifled one of his best ever free kicks into the top left corner of the goal. It will be remembered as one of the best strikes in this year's competition to date.

6 minutes later, Marseille found a way back. After a corner and some scrappy defending, Lucho Gonzalez made no mistake from 10 yards, putting the ball low into the corner.

On the hour mark, Madrid came back at Marseille. A cross hit Ronaldo and the ball fell kindly to Raul Albiol, who steered it low into the bottom corner.

Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the game with his second of the match in the 80th minute, not long after Lucho Gonzalez had missed a penalty. The ball fell kindly to him after a the goalkeeper and defender collided, leaving Ronaldo to direct the ball into an open goal from just outside the box.

Real Madrid topped their group with 13 points and will go through with fellow heavyweights AC Milan to the knockout stages of the Champions League. The competition will resume in the new year.
