Cristiano Ronaldo was Real Madrid's hero as he scored either side of half time to contribute to an eventual 5-0 victory at the Bernabeu.

Madrid looked lively from the very start and a solo run from Ronaldo saw them open the scoring in the first minute with a powerful low strike from 12 yards.

Xerez fought hard and were unlucky not to level the scoring as they hit the cross bar and forced Casillas into action several times.

On the other end, Cristiano was behind much of Real Madrid's good offensive work and was causing havoc for the Xerez defense.

After half time, Real Madrid applied a greater sense of urgency and Ronaldo scored a trademark header from a corner kick.

Substitute Guti then made it 3-0 after Benzema miss-hit and the scoring was wrapped up by Benzema, courtesy of a deflection and Ruud van Nistelrooy, another late substitute.
